Watch out that HUD with the Fair Housing Act doesn’t come after you for writing that letter!
Many of my buyers over the years have written letters to the home owner about the home that they absolutely love and want to purchase giving details about their family and what they love about the home…… or I have delivered those letters to my home sellers along with the purchase offers!
I just read an article from the National Association of Realtors that states those letters may raise fair housing concerns and could open up Realtors and their clients to fair housing violations! WHY? They often contain personal information and reveal characteristics such as race, religion or family status.
What are the Fair Housing protected classes that could be revealed in the letter that may “influence” the seller as an unlawful basis to accept or reject an offer:
- Race.
- Color.
- National Origin.
- Religion.
- Sex.
- Familial Status.
- Disability.
What are your thoughts on sending on that letter to the seller?
