Summer brings out the do-it-your-selfers. Some of the things we want to do involve concrete (boy, is it expensive!)….. and whether it is reparing a wall, sidewalk or some ambitious project. For my summer project, I want to have extra driveway space. On the right side of my driveway I have a bit of space I could use. I learned about concrete….and the right kind of material will make the job better. So here it goes:
Standard concrete works for many jobs because it is very strong. It is fairly easy to work with, but it does take at least 24 hours to walk on.
Quikrete 5000,ealy strength concrete, sets up faster and produces more heat. It is especially good for footings, steps, columns, and patios. It can be walked on in 10 to 12 hours.
Projects that usually require wire mesh in the concrete can be simplified by using fiber-reinforced concrete or crack-resistant concrete. The construction grade mix resists cracking and impact damage. It is more expensive and takes 28 days to reach its full strength!
For fence posts or for setting mailboxes and yard lamps, fast-setting concrete is a good choice. It is a blend of cement, sand, and gravel that sets up in 20 to 40 minutes, takes no mixing and reaches 4000 pounds of strength per square inch in 28 days.
Funny thing, but after learning about concrete. I decided to use pavers instead…. they have a luxurious look for the same price and I found a great company in San Diego, Genesis Stoneworks!
That’s all folks on this summer project.
August 1, 2008: Actually, that’s not all on this project…. I want to let you know that Genesis Stoneworks did not meet my expectations.
