Friendlier Highway 101| Solana Beach

Pedestrian Friendly Shopping & Dining by 2013?

  • Reduced speed limits to 10 mph
  • Southbound shared car & bike lane ("a sharrow lane") with a reduced median to compensate for the widened sidewalks
  • Benches, fountains and public art

Final design is due in December. The city of Solana Beach is paying for the project through its allocation of SANDAG transportation funds. Several North County cities including Del Mar and Encinitas are pursuing similar changes to their downtown stretches of Highway 101.

What are your thoughts about the coastal communities implementing such changes?  What will it do to the commute time?  Do you think it will attract shoppers and tourists?
